The Oxford American is an American quarterly literary magazine “dedicated to featuring the very best in Southern writing while documenting the complexity and vitality of the American South.”

I first learned about this publication in 2019 and immediately connected with its edifying celebration of Southern Music. In 2020 I received a complimentary copy of the periodical featuring a fascinating article by Tiana Clark, titled “Nina Is Everywhere I Go.” This is one of those ‘must read’ narratives that illuminates much more than just the musical life of Simone.

Clark is the author of two poetry collections: I Can’t Talk About the Trees Without the Blood and Equilibrium. Her writing has appeared in or is forthcoming from the New Yorker, Poetry Magazine, the Washington Post, Buzzfeed News, and elsewhere. The Oxford American is an outstanding publication and, in my view, justly describes itself as “an American quarterly literary magazine dedicated to featuring the very best in Southern writing while documenting the complexity and vitality of the American South.” In addition, I’m quite pleased to share that OA is located in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Marvell, Arkansas, where my grandparents were born is just a rock’s throw away. –Jonathan
