La Crosse County’s health director has tested positive for COVID-19.

The La Crosse County Health Department announced on Tuesday that Jen Romabalski, the department’s health director, is experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19 and is recuperating at home. The press release said Rombalski was exposed to the virus by a member of her household who is attending school in person.

The department said no other staff members have been exposed to the virus because Rombalski and the majority of staff have been working remotely.

The La Crosse area has been a hot spot of the coronavirus spread in recent weeks, leading to a shutdown of in-person classes at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus. In mid-September, the county saw an average of 127 new cases daily and hit the top of the New York Times’ list of metro areas with the highest number of cases by population.

On Monday, the county had an average of 39 new daily cases of the virus.
