The state of Wisconsin, Milwaukee shelter agencies, volunteers, police departments and community organizations will count the number of homeless in Milwaukee County on Wednesday night.
Survey manager Nancy Monarrez said the data gathered every six months help reveal the reasons individuals and families become homeless.
She said that the last count tallied 1,500 people who were homeless. The top three reasons for homelessness were job loss, family breakup and substance abuse.

Monarrez said the data allow state and federal agencies to decide on how to fund services for the homeless.
