René Izquierdo and Elina Chekan perform several classical Cuban guitar pieces beginning with four Cuban Dances by Manuel Saumell (La Virtuosa, La Niña Bonita, La Nené, La Quejosita) followed by Eduardo Martín’s Sones y Flores.

René then plays four traditional Cuban pieces including Zapateo Cubano, Ojos Brujos, El Arroyo que Murmura, and Drume Negrita . Finally we hear Martín’s Mirandote, Lecuona’s La Comparsa and Rojas’ Guajira a Mi Madre.

René Izquierdo graduated from the Guillermo Tomas, Amadeo Roldan Conservatory and Superior Institute of Art in Havana, and holds a Master of Music and an Artist Diploma degrees from the Yale University School of Music. He is currently a professor of classical guitar at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Elina Chekan holds Master of Music degrees in Orchestral Conducting and Classical Guitar Performance from the Belarus Academy of Music, and a Master of Music degree from Yale University. She has been on the Guitar faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 2005.
