Gov. Scott Walker said Monday he would welcome a campaign challenge from Madison Mayor Paul Soglin.

Soglin, a Democrat, said over the weekend he is considering a run against Walker in the 2018 governor’s race.

Speaking with reporters Monday at a press conference on the transportation budget in Fitchburg, Walker said he would “love to have that battle.”

“He’s an unabashed, throwback to the 1960s radical liberal out there, and the idea that he thinks Bernie Sanders is a good model for him I think makes for a great contrast,” Walker said. “It probably does him well in Madison, I doubt it does well across the rest of the state.”

No high-profile Democratic candidates have filed to run against the governor.

Walker has said he won’t make his own official re-election announcement until after the state budget is complete.
