Voters Still Don’t Know Much About Attorney General Candidates, Poll Finds

The latest Marquette University Law School poll finds that the race for Wisconsin attorney general remains tight, but also that a lot of voters still don’t know much about either Republican candidate Brad Schimel or Democrat Susan Happ.

The poll found that Waukesha County District Attorney Schimel is at 41 percent, while Jefferson County DA Happ is at 39 percent, and 19 percent of voters are undecided.

The two contenders are tied among registered voters, but pollster Charles Franklin said that large percentages of people surveyed say they still don’t know enough to have much of an opinion about either candidate.

“It’s really stunning how little people have learned about the candidates, with nearly 80 percent or more still unaware of either candidate with five weeks to go,” said Franklin. “Now, there has not been much television advertising. There’s been some coverage of the race, though I think it’s fair to say that the governor’s race has really dominated the coverage.”

Republican candidate Brad Schimel said he’s airing his first TV commercial this week. Happ’s campaign says that as voters focus on the race over the next five weeks, they’ll respond to her efforts to get partisan politics out of the attorney general’s office.
