Mining Bill Signed Into Law

A new mining bill, which critics say will weaken state environmental regulations, has been signed into law by Governor Scott Walker.

The new law will streamline the approval process of a massive iron ore mine in Ashland and Iron counties. Native American tribes are expected to challenge permits for the mine, arguing federal treaties may be violated. But Walker told reporters in Milwaukee this morning that he will keep talking with tribal leaders.

“Ultimately there will be a process in place. We’ll consult, just as I started doing nearly two years ago with the tribal governments in the state, about this project, and I think in the end we’ll find a way to get it moving forward.”

Walker also says the state will work with federal agencies that may have concerns about the iron ore mine. The Governor claims many jobs will be created in northwest Wisconsin, and at mining equipment makers in Milwaukee and other communities.
