Federal prosecutors charged a Madison police officer Friday with theft of government property following a sting operation on Thursday.
Officer Andrew Pullum. Madison Police Department
U.S. Attorney John Vaudreuil said 31-year-old Andrew Pullum allegedly took almost $4,000 in cash from the trunk of a car after an undercover agent told him her boyfriend was dealing drugs and that there might be money and cocaine in his car. Pullum followed the false tip and stole the money agents had planted in the car. He then called in a drug-sniffing dog, but he didn’t report the finding the cash.

Vaudreuil said there’s no indication that any other Madison police officers were involved in illegal activity.
“No evidence at any time has led us to think that officer Pullem was anything other than a lone bad apple,” he said.
Federal agents had Pullum under surveillance since August when Madison police got an anonymous tip that he was planning a robbery with a convicted felon. Police Chief Mike Koval passed the tip on to the federal officials.
