A police officer in Superior was shot during a traffic stop early Sunday that ended in the driver crashing their van into Superior Middle School.
The officer was hospitalized but later released, according to a statement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
In a statement on Facebook, Superior Mayor Jim Paine said the suspect was in custody and the area was safe.

“I’m grateful for the quick response of the many agencies that responded and the tremendous valor of the officer that was first on scene,” the statement read.
The officer stopped the vehicle just before 3:00 a.m. Sunday in response to a report of a potential domestic dispute. The DOJ statement said the initial officer and another responding officer shot the suspect during the incident.
The suspect fled the scene, according to DOJ, and crashed their vehicle into a school building. The person was treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Douglas County jail.
The Duluth News Tribune reported the school sustained “significant damage.” A photo published by the News Tribune shows a white van crashed into the front entrance of the building.
In an afternoon statement on social media, the School District of Superior said the middle school would be closed on Monday.
“We will need to temporarily keep all students and staff out of the school building,” the statement read. “Superior Middle School will temporary transition to the At-Home Learning Day plan that the school district developed for inclement weather following the sensitive incident.”
