Gary Miller Says He's Taking Time To Explore Campus

While almost 2,000 students will move into their dorms on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay later this week, the school is also welcoming another newcomer: Chancellor Gary Miller, who began work earlier this month.

Before coming to Green Bay, Gary Miller was the chancellor at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

He said that he’s spent some time acclimating himself.

“Understanding the physical layout, knowing where people are, where the various offices are,” he said. “I’ve just started that process. I was out today at lunch walking around various buildings. I got lost a couple of times.”

UW-Green Bay is in many ways a unique campus. It’s located in the northeastern part of town and is a little removed from shopping centers and the like, so many juniors and seniors choose to live on campus rather than commute.

Another unusual aspect is that many of the buildings are connected by underground hallways so students don’t have to brave the winter cold.

Miller said one of the school’s strengths is a series of recreational trails that are open to the public.

“We do have a beautiful campus above ground and a lot of people comment on that. So we want to make sure we have opportunities to use that too,” said Miller.

Once he learns his way around, Miller said one of his first-year priorities will be to work with faculty and staff on developing new directions for various programs.

Correction: The original version of this story erroneously reported that nearly 20,000 students were arriving this week. In fact, almost 2,000 students are expected. WPR regrets this error.
