Alverno College in Milwaukee will have a new leader this fall. The Catholic school, which is one of just 42 all-female colleges left in the United States, announced Andrea Lee will step in as president of the 2,200-student campus.

She comes to the role after nearly 20 years as president of the country’s largest women’s college, St. Catherine’s University in Minnesota.

Lee said Alverno’s curriculum, focused on assessing real-world skills, sets is apart from women’s colleges across the country that are seeing enrollment decline.

“The abilities that are clearly demonstrated by their graduates in their places of employment, in their communities, in their churches, really speaks to young women and their parents who are looking for a place where their daughters’ abilities can be well developed,” she said.

Alverno College Board of Trustees Chair Don Layden said Lee’s record of increasing enrollment and fundraising set her apart from other candidates.
