Another University of Wisconsin campus has announced a potential early retirement plan for its employees, raising concerns about larger class sizes.

UW-Milwaukee is the latest school to reveal such a plan in response to possible state budget cuts. But at a campus meeting Monday, Milwaukee philosophy professor Jay Moore asked Vice Chancellor Robin Van Harpen whether buyouts would lead to more students being crammed into classes taught by remaining faculty.

“Those of us who might be in the retirement window are now faced with the choice of do we accept this or do we visit an increase in class sizes on our colleagues?” Moore asked.

“I think that’s a fair implication on this,” Van Harpen answered.

State lawmakers will decide over the next few weeks whether to accept Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed $300 million cut to the UW System.
