A government watchdog group has hired the longtime editor of The Progressive magazine to be its next executive director.
Matt Rothschild will start work at the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign in January. He will leave his position as senior editor of The Progressive after working there for 32 years.
Rothschild said he’s excited about his new job because he views cleaning up the political system as the central issue facing democracy.

“It’s just become more flagrant. I think people in Wisconsin know it, people across the country know it,” said Rothschild. “The power of money, the power of private money, the power of corporate money in our electoral system is astonishing.”
While The Progressive is a liberal magazine, Rothschild said he’ll have no problem casting a spotlight on corruption in either political party.
Rothschild will replace outgoing Executive Director Mike McCabe, who held the job for 15 years.
