The Milwaukee Association of Commerce is expressing a sense of optimism for businesses following the presidential election of Republican Donald Trump. Steve Baas, the association’s vice president of government affairs, said he hopes Trump ushers in positive change for businesses.
“I’d like to think there’s a sense of optimism we can have some positive reforms and some regulatory and tax changes,” Baas said. “That might increase the competitiveness of Wisconsin businesses and also United States’ business across the board.”
Baas said the election of Sen. Ron Johnson could also be beneficial.

He said Trump’s and Johnson’s business backgrounds will hopefully give them an advantage in finding solutions in Washington, D.C.
Still, Baas said Trump’s unpredictability creates a high risk-high reward situation compared to having Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in office.
“Her agenda and her policies might have been easier for business to predict going out,” Baas said. “I guess I might say that she probably had lower upside but more certainty from a business standpoint.”
Baas said moving forward he would like to see Trump reduces taxes and regulations to help increase the competitiveness of Wisconsin businesses.
