The number of people who have died from the novel coronavirus pandemic jumped by 19 in figures released Saturday by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

Fifty-six people have died, according to the latest numbers from the DHS, compared to 37 people on Friday. That does not include five additional deaths in Milwaukee County, which would bring the statewide total to 61.

The number of positive tests also continues to grow. Wisconsin now has 2,112 positive cases of COVID-19. There are 588 people hospitalized with the disease. The state has returned 23,859 negative test results.

The number of confirmed cases increased by more than 10 percent from Friday’s total of 1,916.

There are confirmed cases in 56 Wisconsin counties. Two counties — Manitowoc and Pierce — reported their first positive cases. In fact, Pierce reported seven new cases.

Wisconsin’s cities are seeing the highest number of positive cases related to COVID-19. As of Saturday, DHS reported there were 1,069 positive test results in Milwaukee County alone. Other highly populated counties with a large number of cases include: Dane County with 253 cases and five deaths; Waukesha County with 147 cases and three deaths; Ozaukee County with 53 cases and six deaths; Fond du Lac County with 36 positive cases and two deaths; and Rock County with 26 cases and one death.

The following counties have no confirmed cases as of Saturday afternoon: Burnett, Florence, Forest, Green Lake, Kewaunee, Lafayette, Langlade, Lincoln, Pepin, Polk, Price, Sawyer, Taylor, Vernon, Washburn and Waushara counties.

Across the state, the 23,859 people who have tested negative for the virus represents an increase of about 6.6 percent from Friday’s total of 22,377 negative tests.
