What was once state Highway 41 now has another designation: The 175-mile stretch from the Illinois border north to Green Bay is now officially Interstate 41.
Wisconsin Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb had the honor of uncovering the red, white and blue I-41 shield.
“Economic development in this corridor, the Fox Cities and the southeastern part of the state where this passes through is really important,” Gottlieb said. “And we recognize the importance of the interstate designation.”

Gottlieb said a $1.5 billion upgrade between Oshkosh and Green Bay played a role in getting the interstate designation.
“And really what this interstate designation does is it leverages that $1.5 billion investment to create this interstate corridor,” he said.
The I-41 signs will go up this summer, along with other signs upping the speed limit to 70 mph.
