Are you searching for something new to do in the snow?

The Spurs & Skis Skijoring Stampede in Rice Lake could certainly be of interest.

What is skijoring you may ask? The word “skijoring” is a Norwegian word which means “ski driving.” In Rice Lake it combines skiing, racing and rodeo with a horse and rider pulling a teammate on skis or a snowboard.

“The horse pulls the skier or snowboarder on an obstacle course of snow-made jumps — some of them go pretty fast and it’s timed,” said Rice Lake Tourism Executive Director Nicky Repka.

She said the sport is very popular in Montana and last year’s event, the first in Rice Lake, attracted participants from all over the Midwest.

There are four performance classes featured: sport, open, snowboarder and youth.

More than 1,000 spectators experienced the event last year and Repka said they left very excited about coming back again this year.

The Spurs & Skis Skijoring Stampede will feature a bonfire, food trucks, beverages, a warming tent and an added addition this year: a snow sculpture event.

The skijoring starts on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m., tickets are $10, kids 10 and under are free. Find out more at RiceLakeWis.com.
