After his death in 1911, Gustav Mahler’s music faded from concert halls until the 1950s, when European conductors and record companies brought it back and made it more popular than ever. What accounts for the early neglect of Mahler’s music and what accounts for its popularity today? Madison Symphony Orchestra Associate Conductor Kyle Knox will provide some insights from one of Mahler’s best-known works. Excerpts come from Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde / Bernstein, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
