Some families use time over the holidays to volunteer, and some students take an interim trip overseas on missionary work or global outreach. They raise money, and awareness, on social media. Our guest says there’s a right way and a wrong way to share volunteer experiences online. She helped create a social media guide aimed at Westerners traveling in developing countries. She explains strategies to challenge stereotypes and promote dignity around the globe.
How did you share your images of volunteering the right way? What did you think about before you uploaded them? Have you ever posted evidence of missionary work that you later realized was disrespectful? What do you want people to consider about social media and global ethics in volunteering? Email ideas@wpr.org, post on the Ideas Network Facebook page, or tweet @wprmornings. You can share your story live on the air. Just call 800-642-1234 during the show.
