When Luke first invites Thad to “stop by the atelier” whenever he feels like it, Thad feels he must have an excuse for making such a visit. Soon, he learns that the shop is a gathering place for the neighborhood where he can meet his neighbors in a manner he never would be able to do as an outsider. Thad recalls when his family moved back to the United States when he was a child.
