John Chisholm handily won the Democratic primary for Milwaukee County District Attorney by a 2-to-1 margin over challenger Verona Swanigan.

Chisholm’s victory virtually guarantees his re-election in the November general election because no Republican is on the fall ballot.

Conservatives who were investigated in Chisholm’s John Doe Two probe allegeding financial coordination with Gov. Scott Walker’s recall campaign spent heavily on ads criticizing the incumbent district attorney during the primary election season. But Chisholm said Milwaukee County voters rejected the advertisements.

“I’m just proud of the citizens of Milwaukee, they saw through it, and they made the decision that I think is in the best interest of democracy, and we’re going to continue to fight on that issue,” Chisholm said.

Chisholm is looking to get the U.S. Supreme Court to review the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling that halted the second John Doe probe. Chisholm said he also plans to continue work on reducing gun violence and on improving police-community relations.
