Rallies in Madison and Milwaukee Saturday will mark the 11th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan, and push for an end to the conflict.
President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are both calling for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the year 2014. That’s not quickly enough for Mike Helbick of Peace Action-Wisconsin. Helbich says the troops should come home now, and Afghans should decide how to govern themselves, “Our peacekeeping missions are not getting it done.”
Helbick also says a lot of tax dollars are being spent on foreign military intervention, while there are many needs for that money in the U.S. Wisconsin troops continue to come from and go to Afghanistan. A group of 16 is headed overseas soon to help mentor Afghan border police, while hoping to avoid insider attacks.
