Ninety-eight people in Wisconsin have been the victims of gun homicides this year.

There was one fatal shooting this week in Milwaukee. Police there say Zachary Rainer, a 24-year-old black man, was shot to death during the day on Monday. Police did not disclose a potential motive for the killing.

The death happened just a few days before a Milwaukee minister group Pastors United held a forum for candidates in next week’s elections. The group has been trying to reduce gun violence in the city and President Gregory Lewis said that after the election results are in, his nonpartisan group will soon ask the winners to meet with them about curbing the amount of gunfire.

“Anybody with just common sense, you have to understand that these things have to be addressed,” said Lewis. “Because listen: If things go bad in one area, they certainly sprout out to other areas. Don’t think that this is going to be confined to one area.”

Lewis said he doesn’t expect gun violence to end overnight. He said it will take things like job creation and better coordination with local police to make a sizable dent in the death toll.
