Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke said that she’s focusing on increasing voter turnout at a rally at the Outagamie County Democratic Headquarters in Appleton on Monday.
The day marked the first day of early voting in Wisconsin, which is available at county clerks’ offices until the end of the month, except on weekends.
The Fox Valley has long been seen as a conservative bastion, and former U.S. Senator Joe McCarthy was an area native.

With just more than two weeks before the election Burke urged her supporters to get friends and family to the polls on Nov. 4.
“Turnout is just going to be the most important thing at this point,” said Burke. “And getting our the message to people about getting out, the contrast here, what is at stake. And that their vote really is important. And so we’re going to continue to travel the state and make sure people get out to vote.”
After the rally Democratic, party volunteers escorted about a dozen voters to the Appleton city clerk’s office a few blocks away.
The Fox Valley area has many municipalities spread over three counties, meaning there are multiple sites where people can vote early.
