Brother Of Fatally Shot Milwaukee Man Says Police Need Education On Mental Illness

The brother of a Milwaukee man who was shot to death by a police officer this week after a struggle is joining the call for more help for the mentally ill.

Nathaniel Hamilton says his deceased brother, Dontre, was a good person, but was often scared and felt that someone was “after him.” Nathaniel is asking that more police officers be trained on how to approach a person who has mental health problems.

“Just being educated,” said Hamilton. “You want people to protect you, you want them to be educated. You want people dealing with your money, they should be educated. These people are in charge of our lives. So they should be educated.”

Hamilton says he has faith in a state Department of Justice-led investigation of the shooting of his brother, but he says his family is asking questions of the Milwaukee County medical examiner, and is deciding whether to hire an attorney.
