The third annual Ladies’ Musky Fishing School is slated for mid-October, offering an opportunity for female anglers to get experience on catching one of Wisconsin’s most elusive fish.

The event, slated for the weekend of Oct. 18, is being hosted by Deerfoot Lodge and Resort in Hayward on the Chippewa Flowage.

The musky is Wisconsin’s state fish and is it any wonder? These elusive swimmers are difficult to catch, so much so that they’re known as the “fish of 10,000 casts.” Expert anglers said fall conditions are ideal to be fishing for muskies, with some of the biggest fish caught during the season.

After catching a 50-and-a-half-inch musky that won her first place in a 2017 tournament, Amanda Wilson was inspired to start the Ladies’ Musky Fishing School. She said the event focuses on celebrating women in the sport.

“There’s something just a little bit different about an event that is completely women teaching other women. There’s a different sense of camaraderie and connection when it’s an all-women event,” said Wilson.

Female anglers of all experience levels are encouraged to participate, from those who have never fished for musky all the way to licensed captains. The event offers a mix of both classroom sessions covering the basics like gear, how to throw a baitcaster and knot tying and hands-on sessions, such as Northern Pike handling to get a feel for the fish and of course, a lot of hours dedicated to fishing time both from the docks and out in boats.

“There are also plenty of opportunities to connect and mingle with other participants in a fun and supportive environment,” said Wilson.
