A Greenfield police officer is in critical condition after being shot by a suspect during a traffic stop early Sunday morning, and the driver who was pulled over is dead.
Shortly after 1:30 a.m., a Greenfield officer pulled over a motorist near South 35th Street and West Oklahoma Avenue. According to a press release from the Greenfield Police Department, the Milwaukee man, 31, initially stopped but then drove off and crashed the car, firing at officers when he had left the vehicle.
One of the officers, 36, who has been on the force for three years, was hit and is in critical but stable condition. Two other officers returned fire on the suspect, killing him at the scene.

The incident, along with footage from the officers’ cameras and squad cars, is being reviewed by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, according to the press release.
