DNR To Study Environmental Impact Of Proposed Sheboygan County Golf Course

Dozens of Sheboygan County residents have asked the state Department of Natural Resources to closely scrutinize the Kohler Corp.’s plan for another golf course along Lake Michigan and partly in a state park.

The DNR held a meeting for people to suggest issues the department should study in its environmental impact statement for the proposed golf course in a wooded area in and near Kohler-Andrae State Park. Many local residents who attended listed concerns.

Ron Gildner asked the DNR to consider a no-build option that would have the Kohler Corp. donate its land to the state.

“We have more than enough golf courses in Sheboygan County already,” Gildner said. “But more and more wild areas keep disappearing unnecessarily.”

Others asked the DNR to closely study potential harm to surface and groundwater, wildlife, sand dunes and Native American burial mounds.

The few pro-golf course speakers at the meeting said the proposed development would be good for the Sheboygan-area economy.
