La Crosse Construction Firm Announces Closure

100 Employees Set To Lose Their Jobs By End Of The Year

By

A long-time design and construction firm based in La Crosse announced this week it’s closing its doors with 100 people slated to lose their jobs.

TCI Architects/Engineers/Contractors Inc. has built and renovated schools, grocery stores, and hospitals across the country.

The 38-year-old firm helped popularize in-house design and construction in the region, which is now dominant in the industry.

But TCI has now filed for Chapter 128, a debt consolidation plan that’s an alternative to bankruptcy. According to TCI’s attorney, the company was unable “to raise enough additional capital in order to provide sufficient cash flow and reserves” to remain competitive.

La Crosse Area Development Corporation Executive Director James Hill said he hates to see anyone lose their job. But La Crosse is experiencing record growth and he hopes former employees can find new work quickly.

“The construction industry in the La Crosse area is really busy. I mean it’s really booming. Contractors trying to find tradesmen are really having a difficult time,” Hill said.

A press release from the company’s shareholders said TCI will complete contracts and projects. Workers are being phased out over the year and will be paid wages and benefits through their last day.

Some employees are reportedly talking about forming a new design and build company similar to TCI.

Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development is providing services to employees who are losing their jobs.
