Eau Claire police have identified a 59-year-old man who was fatally shot by an officer last weekend.
Authorities say Eau Claire resident Michael Caponigro fired at officers who were checking on his welfare Saturday night after receiving a report that he had made “homicidal and suicidal” comments to an acquaintance.
Police say Caponigro refused to cooperate during crisis negotiations and at one point fired a shotgun through a window at authorities. He then was shot by Sgt. Jesse Henning and pronounced dead at the scene.
