WITC Offers Free Tuition For 2018 High School Graduates

Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC) will begin offering free tuition to next spring’s high school graduates.

Jena Vogtman, marketing director at WITC’s Superior campus, said the purpose of the program is to help make college a reality for high school graduates. She said students must apply for as much financial and federal aid as possible in order to qualify for the scholarship. Vogtman said the rest of the tuition would be covered by WITC’s foundation fund.

“First, they have to be a Wisconsin student. They have to be a 2018 high school GED or home-schooled graduate, have an expected family contribution of about $3,500 or lower, and that’s as determined by their financial aid,” she said. “There’s a free application for financial aid known as FAFSA, and (they) also have to achieve a 2.0 GPA in their senior year.”

Vogtman said students must be enrolled full-time to qualify for the scholarship. She said students are often surprised by how much aid they can receive.

“In the end, I think a lot of students find that they are eligible for more than they had expected, “she said. “Often times what happens is, a lot of times, they are covered in full. There ends up not too many students left that actually end up needing this assistance to help fill that gap for them.”

Vogtman said they have around 5,000 students enrolled on their four campuses in Superior, Ashland, Rice Lake and New Richmond. She said applications must be received by next April.
