The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 1 percent of the world population has an autism spectrum disorder. In addition, the prevalence of autism in American children increased by nearly 120% percent from 2000 to 2010. That means more and more families are becoming familiar with a disorder that was relatively unknown just a few decades ago.
