Monday’s winter weather has caused dozens of car accidents around Wisconsin. The Department of Transportation put the number at 165 as of late Monday afternoon, with the number expected to rise during rush hour.

The DOT’s Gina Paige said the spike isn’t surprising.

“A lot of times with the first winter storm, it’s kind of like riding a bike; it takes a little bit to get back into it,” said Paige. “So we’re just trying to remind drivers to slow down and leave some space and take some time getting to their destination.”

Most of the crashes have been in the southern part of the state but accidents are expected to be more widespread as the storm progresses into the evening.
