A bill in the state Legislature would allow for community solar projects outside the control of utility companies and cooperatives, which are currently the only entities in Wisconsin allowed to provide solar power to paying customers.

We Energies and two other Wisconsin utilities will purchase four new renewable energy projects, expected to come online in the next few years. 

We Energies says the renewable projects will send energy to the grid every day while the natural gas plants will be used primarily during peak demand times.

This summer, President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law, ending  various tax credits a decade ahead of schedule. The credits could be used to buy electric vehicles and to install solar panels on homes. 

State utility regulators approved a pair of renewable energy projects last week, including Wisconsin’s first large-scale wind farm in more than a decade.

An eleventh hour amendment made in the Senate will allow renewable energy projects that begin construction by 2026 or come online by 2027 to receive tax credits, which is slightly less restrictive than a previous version of the bill.

The state’s first large utility-scale battery storage project came online in southeastern Wisconsin this month, providing enough storage to power more than 130,000 homes for four hours.
