Many international corporations have philanthropic wings in their business plan. In recent years, major companies--such as Nike--have developed charitable programs aimed at alleviating poverty for girls and women in developing countries. However, according to the book The Gender Effect: Capitalism, Feminism, and the Corporate Politics of Development, this philanthropy can sometimes do more harm than good and isn't altogether altruistic. Kathryn Moeller, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, joins us to talk about her research.
