More than 35,000 fans are expected to attend a soccer game in Milwaukee on Wednesday night.

The game will feature major soccer clubs from Mexico and England.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Latino Studies Professor Enrique Figueroa said the Latino community internationally values soccer, and that the recent World Cup shows the multi-cultural appeal of the sport.

“I would be very interested to find out, of the 35,000 or so people that go to the game tonight, what percent of those are Latinos — to get a sense of really to what extent that the people who went are from non-Latino backgrounds,” said Figueroa. “I would suspect there’s a larger number than people think.”

Figueroa said recent Census figures show the Latino population in Wisconsin is nearing 400,000 and has surpassed the African-American population in the state. He said as the Latino population continues to grow he expects more events and products aimed at that community.
