With the retirement of Democratic state Sen. Janet Bewly, currently the Senate minority leader, the race to represent the 25th District seat covering most of northwest Wisconsin is particularly competitive

On the November ballot are Republican Romaine Quinn of Cameron, a former Assembly member who early in his career was the youngest person elected mayor of Rice Lake. Hoping to keep the seat in Democratic hands is Kelly Westlund, the longtime Northwest Regional Representative for U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and a small business owner. The two square off in a debate of regional and national issues moderated by “Simply Superior” host Robin Washington.

Before the pandemic, vocal and piano duo Pippi Ardenia and Daniel Leahy were jazz mainstays in our region, playing everywhere from the Oldenburg House in Carlton, Minnesota, to an International Dark Skies Association artists-in-residence stint in Ashland and Washburn. Now, the northern Illinois couple checks in with Washington as they prepare to hit the road again, with their song “I’m Grateful” expressing thanks for surviving COVID and the beauty of Wisconsin skies.
