It’s a 20-minute, 2-½ mile trip made between the same two points 20 times a day — and it never gets boring. That’s how Captain Will Schaub of the Madeline Island Ferry describes his summer job bringing residents, visitors and emergency workers along with vehicles from bicycles to fully loaded semis between Bayfield and the largest of the Apostle Islands. Schaub, who first started as a deckhand 35 years ago, shares his experiences with “Simply Superior” host Robin Washington.
Also, as a teen at Duluth’s Central High School in the 1970s, Michael Baker couldn’t stop banging his drumsticks against anything that would make a sound. Inspired by music teacher Jim Stellmaker, he went on to become the Twin Ports’ most accomplished musician, playing with A-listers from Michael Jackson to Sting to Elton John. Most notably, Baker was Whitney Houston’s music director for nearly 20 years until her 2012 death. Now, Baker is remembered in his hometown after his own passing from cancer last week, as well as through his own words spoken in a 2011 tribute in Superior to his musical mentor.
