Hockey is more than a sport in Minnesota and Wisconsin; it’s a way of life making the region one of the biggest contributors of players in the NHL. Director Tommy Haines delves into that passion with his chronicle of two high school teams: longtime powerhouse Eveleth on the Iron Range, which may have seen its better days, and more recent goal leader Hermantown. Haines speaks with “Simply Superior” host Robin Washington about his film, citing as an inspiration the acclaimed documentary “Hoop Dreams” that similarly told the story of Chicago youths longing to play in the NBA.

Also, her name is the Viking word for love, and she draws on it in songs celebrating the strong women in her Scandinavian ancestry. Duluth-born singer-songwriter Elska shares her music with Washington, including her unapologetically political hit, “Bounty Hunter.”

Plus: Want a real fright for Halloween? Superior’s spooky Fairlawn Mansion should do the job, but if you want more, head over to Duluth’s retired William A. Irvin ore boat, decked out as the “Haunted Ship.”
