A Duluth hiker is celebrating her accomplishment and challenging stereotypes after finishing a two and a half-month trek across the wild spaces of Wisconsin. She joins host Robin Washington to reflect on her journey this week on “Simply Superior”. Plus, the state’s new diversity and equity advisory group gets down to business.
Emily Ford and her loaner sled dog Diggins finished their 10-week trek of the 1,100+ mile trail criss-crossing Wisconsin last week, becoming the first Black woman known to have solo hiked the entire Ice Age Trail. She and Washington talk about her journey, the lessons she’s learned about herself and how it has been an inspiration for others.
Also on this week’s show, WPR’s Dean Kallenbach teams up with Washington to speak with three members of the newly formed Governor’s Council on Diversity and Equity, which held its first meeting in February. They are Odawa White, dean of students at Lac Courtes Oreilles Ojibwe College in Hayward and Mai Xiong, president of the organization Hmong American Leadership and Economic Development and a member of the Eau Claire City Council, and Dawn Crim, secretary-designee of the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services and chair of the new council.
