September 21 at 10 a.m., Wisconsin Public Radio’s Route 51 features the New People Environmental Summit, scheduled for October 14 at the Ho-Chunk Casino banquet center in Nekoosa. The event is sponsored by Clean Green Action of Wisconsin Rapids, which describes it as an effort to bring “native people and the rest of us together in protecting our environment for the next seven generations.”
Glen Moberg will moderate a discussion with summit organizer David Gorski, who was also a Democratic candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly 72nd District, Jon Greendeer, Executive Director of the Ho-Chunk Nation Department of Heritage Preservation and Sandy Gokey, a teacher with the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The term “new people” comes from an Ojibwe story about a coalition of native and non-native people that will arise to protect the earth.
