Rather than speed and power, curling is a sport of skill and precision that has been nicknamed “chess on ice.” What began in the late 1600s as an enjoyable pastime based on throwing stones over ice has evolved into one of the most popular Olympic sports of the past decade. Curling may be under-appreciated by those who don’t understand it, but there are many reasons to enjoy the sport, including a thriving local community that welcomes people of all abilities to participate.
Shereen Siewert welcomes Team USA Wheelchair Curling Team skip Matthew Thums, Women’s National Team Member Kim Susans and John Bast from the Eau Claire Curling Club for a discussion on the sport as the world prepares to watch international athletes compete at the XXIV Olympic Winter Games.
