November 14, 2013: Chester Nez, Navajo Code Talker

Air Date:
Heard On Route 51

This Thursday, November 14th at 10:00 a.m., Route 51 presents a very special Veterans Week program, as we feature an interview with Chester Nez, the last surviving member of the Navajo code talkers. Nez, was one of 29 Navajo marines whose native American language produced a code that couldn’t be broken by the Japanese, and helped America win World War II. Mr. Nez will be joined by Judith Schiess Avila, who helped him write his autobiography, Code Talker, the First and Only Memoir by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of World War II. Other guests include Walter John Chilsen, a member of the Wisconsin Broadcasting Hall of Fame who fought the Japanese in World War Two, and James Campbell, co-director of the Honor Flight program, which brings veterans to the World War Two memorial in Washington D.C. Chester Nez drew hundreds of people when he appeared in Veterans Day ceremonies this week in Edgar and Wausau.
