Wisconsin has a long, but hidden, LGBTQ+ history full of trailblazers who – when faced with intolerance – responded by creating community, living authentically, and having pride in themselves. Today on “Newsmakers” we’re talking to three guests with ties to Southwestern Wisconsin who are instrumental in a new documentary from PBS Wisconsin, “Wisconsin Pride.” Víctor Macías-González is Professor of History and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse; Kristen Whitson is author of “We Will Always Be Here: a Guide to Exploring and Understanding the History of LGBTQ+ Activism in Wisconsin”; and Lauren Journot is with the La Crosse Community Foundation, which provided funding for the documentary. All of today’s guests are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
