At any given time, there are tens of thousands of prisoners in America being held in solitary confinement. Advocates of the practice say it’s needed to keep inmates and staff safe, but critics say solitary is inhumane and even torturous. Our guest this hour is among those critics, and says the long-term psychological damage done by extended periods of time in solitary is great…and there are better, proven alternatives to solitary that prisons should be exploring.
