How NAFTA Renegotiations Could Affect Wisconsin

A fifth round of talks to overhaul the North American Free Trade Agreement are underway in Mexico City. We discuss what renegotiating NAFTA could mean for Wisconsin dairy farmers, manufacturers and other industries. We also look at trade and economy issues in the context of President Donald Trump’s recent trip to Asia.

It’s the first time that negotiators from the U.S., Mexico and Canada has met since March. Dairy farmers want Canada to relax guidelines on American dairy products. They also worry about losing access to the Mexican market. Some manufacturers want the U.S. to have more freedom to impose tariffs on imports that harm American industries.

As the Republican presidential nominee last year, Trump called NAFTA the “worst trade deal” America ever signed and pledged to either fix it or walk away.
