After Angela Garbes gave birth to her first child, she was in so much pain that she could barely get up and down the stairs. No one had told her that the recovery from a c-section could be so difficult — people get c-sections all the time, after all. And when it came time to caring for her new baby, she knew breast was best — but no one told her that breastfeeding was so time-consuming that it was essentially a second job. In her new book Like a Mother: A Feminist Journey through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy, Garbes delves into why doctors don’t usually tell women what childbirth can do to their bodies, why there’s an astonishing lack of evidence-based information about pregnancy and childbirth, why there isn’t better postpartum care for women in the U.S., and more.
