Marine Sanctuary Would Help Preserve Lake Michigan Shipwrecks
During the heyday of shipping on the Great Lakes, the waters of Lake Michigan were notoriously dangerous and claimed hundreds of vessels. Now, a proposed marine sanctuary off the coast of Ozaukee, Sheboygan, and Manitowoc counties could help preserve shipwrecks and allow the public to learn more about maritime history. We talk with a member of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum about the proposal and the history of Great Lakes shipping.
How familiar are you with Wisconsin’s maritime past, and the history that lives beneath our state’s waters? Do you wonder about wrecks that may be near where you live or vacation?
