  • Locally Sourced Food On Rise At Wisconsin Schools

School lunch critics have long advocated for more nutritious, balanced meals featuring fruits and vegetables. Here in Wisconsin, the farm-to-table movement is helping to make that vision a reality.

According to the first “farm to school” census by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 55 percent of Wisconsin schools bought locally-sourced food in 2011-2012.

Advocates of buying local said that this idea helps the economy. In this case, $4.3 million of a $32-million school food budget in Wisconsin stayed in the community, according to the report.

Miriam Grunes, the executive director of the locally-sourced supporters REAP Food Program in Madison, said she’s happy with the new USDA census numbers.

“The opportunity for our local food economy is enormous, ” she said.

Grunes said examples like this demonstrate the possibility “for farmers to have a real economic gain by providing healty meals to students.”

Especially exciting, according to Grunes, is “there’s really been an emphasis on feeding kids fresh fruits and vegetables.”

According to the new census, 19 percent more schools plan to begin adding locally sourced food in the future.

  • The rate of cesarean section births in the United States is up 50% in the last decade. A sociologist looks at the reasons behind this, and what needs to change.

  • A new Madison business that hopes to sell cuddle sessions for $60 an hour has recieved national attention and spawned debate about its merits in the community.
