Speaker of the House Paul Ryan told workers at a suburban Milwaukee manufacturing plant that the Republican effort to change the nation’s tax system can help companies like theirs be competitive in a global economy.

Ryan has been visiting Wisconsin businesses during Congress’ summer break to promote the tax plan his party is expected to take up when lawmakers return to work next week. On Thursday he toured knife-making company Kinetic in Greendale and spent a half hour answering workers’ questions.

Ryan told workers that companies like Kinetic are at a competitive disadvantage with businesses in other countries because taxes in the United States are too high. He also told employees his plan is also to simplify how they file their taxes.

Congress is returning with a long list of to-do items, including raising the debt limit, funding the government and providing assistance for the Harvey recovery effort. That’s all in addition to the tax reform plan Ryan wants to pass.

Earlier Thursday Ryan was in Janesville, his hometown, to listen to emergency responders dealing with opioid overdoses in the area.
